Explain How air bags work?

Vidunenahawula Website (National Institute of Fundamental Studies)

To protect you from damaging yourself in collisions, airbags are installed in many vehicles. When the car collides with something it takes about 50milliseconds for you to hit the steering wheel. So, the airbag should inflate quickly. Explain how air bags inflate when a vehicle collides.

When a vehicle collides there are sensors that can detect this crash. This sensor decide whether to inflate the airbag as the airbag only inflates when there is a collision with a force equal to running a brick wall with a speed at least 10 mph. When the collision force is equal or higher the sensor sends a signal to the ignitor. Then the ignitor ignites the chemical in the airbag. When this chemical is ignited it decomposes into nitrogen gas. So in the airbag the chemical decomposes producing lot of nitrogen gas which inflates the airbag.
