Smoke is probably the most effective way of getting honey bees away. Do you know why?

When a bee colony has made their roof on top of your home you would evacuate them by destroying their hive. You may have seen that people would smoke the hive in order to calm the bees. Have you thought how does smoke distracts the bees? When an intruder comes near the hive bees secrete a chemical to alert other bees. Smoke conceal the chemical’s presence and prevents from alerting other bees. Also when there is a smoke, bees tend to understand it as a forest fire. Therefore to relocate to a new place they store up on honey. As they are stuffed with honey they become lethargic and calm. This is what distracts bees from stinging you.
