Have you thought how do these dogs find explosives?

Vidunenahawula Website (National Institute of Fundamental Studies)

These days in the news you may have seen military personals carrying dogs to suspicious places with the intention of finding explosives. But have you thought how do these dogs find explosives? These dogs are trained in order to detect the smell of an explosive. Normally, dogs have a better sense of smell. They have 20 – 40 times more odor receptors than us and their nose is sensitive. Therefore they can detect a smell with fewer molecules in the air. Most of the explosives have a signature compound which give out a unique smell. Dogs are trained to identify that smell in order to pinpoint the location of the bomb.
