Did you know that sound wave can also be used to levitate small objects?

Vidunenahawula Website (National Institute of Fundamental Studies)

In the modern world sound waves are used in many applicable technology. Echolocation, SONAR, are some of the commonly used ultrasound applications. But did you know that sound wave can also be used to levitate small objects? This is known as acoustic levitation. In an acoustic levitator there is a sound generator and a reflector which reflects the sound. When the sound wave travel and reflect it creates a standing wave. In this standing wave there are high pressure and low pressure points in the middle. When we keep an object between a high and low pressure point an upward force is built due to the difference in pressure. If this force is greater than the force of gravity the object levitates.
