Do you know that it rains diamonds on Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune? They have large amounts of hydrocarbons such as methane in their atmospheres. When lightning storms strike, these clouds of methane break into carbon and hydrogen atoms and they float through the air. These lonely carbon atoms begin to collect and sink into the lower reaches where intense pressures and super-hot temperatures squeeze the carbon atoms into graphite and then to solid diamonds. Researchers have recreated the effect in a lab.
