Have you ever watched an octopus shoot out a cloud of ink to escape to safety? Do you know from what this ink is made of? The main component in octopus ink is melanin. It is same component that us humans have which is responsible for the color of our hair and skin. Octopus produce this ink and keep it in an ink sac. When feeling threatened, Octopus and Squid use their ink as a defense mechanism to escape from prey. They can release large amounts of ink into the water using their siphon.
