Tear up a paper into small pieces and hold a plastic comb near the pieces of paper. Nothing would happen. But if you rub the plastic comb on your dry hair and then hold the plastic comb near the pieces of paper what would happen. The pieces of paper would get attracted to the comb. Explain this phenomena scientifically.
Every object is made up from atoms and it contains electrons and protons. Most objects are neutrally charged which means it contains same no. of protons and electrons. So, at first both the plastic comb and pieces of paper are neutral. Therefore the paper doesn’t get attracted to the comb. When you rub the comb with your dry hair the electron in your hair jumps to the comb making the comb negatively charged. When you hold the negatively charged comb near the pieces of papers the electrons repel to the opposite side of the comb. This makes the surface which is near the comb positive. Therefore an electric force occurs between the comb and the paper which results in paper being attracted to the comb.
