Have you seen putting dry ice to water make huge smoke?

Vidunenahawula Website (National Institute of Fundamental Studies)

In movies or video clips you may have seen people throwing dry ice to water and then a huge smoke could be seen. Dry ice is actually solidified CO2. Have you thought how a huge smoke appears when you put dry ice to water? Normally when a solid receives heat it melts into a liquid. For an example ice melts into liquid water. But when solid CO2 receives heat it changes into CO2 gas without going through the liquid state. This process is known as sublimation. When dry ice is thrown into water it receives heat from the water and changes into CO2 gas. This CO2 gas is the huge smoke we see.
