Imagine you are eating rice with dhal curry. Unexpectedly you spill the dhal curry on your white shirt. You use soap to clean out the curry. Suddenly the yellow colored stain turns red. Can you think why turmeric stain turned red when soap was applied to it? It is mainly because that turmeric is a natural indicator like litmus papers. When turmeric comes in contact with an acid it keep its color as yellow, but if it comes in contact with a base it changes its color to red. Soap is made from sodium hydroxide which is a base. Therefore, as soap is a base, the color of the turmeric stain becomes red.
