Did you know that shark skin’s nanoscale used to create microbe-less surfaces?

In most hospitals the surfaces which can be contaminated with bacteria are coated with chemicals that prevent the growth of bacteria, algae. But these chemicals can also be toxic to humans and environment. So, scientists have managed to find an alternative to this problem through biomimicry. The skin of the shark is used for this. The nano scale pattern of shark’s skin has overlapping plates with parallel ridges which creates an irregular surface. This irregular, rough surface reduces the ability for bacteria to attach on to this surface. Therefore, scientist have used this nanostructure along with TiO2(which is also antibacterial) to create surface with less micro organisms.
