AGRITECH; The Agricultural Biotechnology in Today’s World

Chethiya S Liyanage

Biotechnology is one of the emerging technologies used to have immense potential for all developing countries. It is the industrial use of Micro-organisms and live plant and animal cells to produce substances or effects beneficial to people.

It has major implications for the environment. It has vast potential for use in Agriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, Medicine, Food Industry, Chemical Industry, Pollution Control and the Environment.

Biotechnology in Agriculture is used for modifying different crops and Animals genetically to meet the demand of the food requirement of the Nation.

It is vast and revolutionized the research activities in Agriculture. It has helped in increasing agricultural productivity, diversity and development of the resistant varieties.

In Animal Agriculture, with biotechnology, enhancing the breeding and getting healthier herds is common in today’s world. Further newly developed diagnostic tests, vaccines and medicines help the farmers in treating the diseases; prevent the food borne pathogen entry at the farm level.

In the field of animal husbandry, biotech is being used to increase the production efficiency through manipulation and control of physiological systems and by improving the health and wellbeing of the animals. Biotechnological methods such as the Artificial insemination, Embryo transfer, cloning and genetic engineering have given rise to new varieties of animals that are disease resistant and have a higher production level.

The development of genetically engineered crops is one of the best applications of biotechnology in agriculture and these activities help to ensure sustainable development of the industry. The use of this technology has made the crops more resistant to insects, pests and various diseases, which greatly reduce the dependence on the insecticides and pesticides.

These genetically modified crops require less water as compared to other crops. It ultimately reduces the cost of production and help to improve the environment.
In general the bio-pesticides are environmental friendly.

In the field of Agriculture, it is mainly the   genetic engineering where the crops can be developed endowed with extra genes for Pest &disease resistance and also to get a higher yield.

These methods have enormously increased the scope for evolving improved varieties of plants
of all kinds.

It is now feasible to develop and propagated plants that are resistant to different constraint such as drought, salinity and various pests in disease. This has facilitated in developing alternative new strategies towards pest control including the use of biological control agents, attractants and grow affecting agents.

Biotech methods can be used for development of hybrid seeds, which are capable of better performing.
It is by the fusion of two different genotypes, which is superior to its parents under different
agronomical conditions.

Major biotechnological research is done worldwide is in the field of tissue culture. Using tissue culture technique, unlimited numbers of plants are being propagated from a single plant possessing the desired characteristics.  Various vegetative plants of agricultural, horticultural and plantation crops can be developed through micro propagation, colonel propagation, and somatic embryogenesis.

The main advantage of tissue culture application is that enumerable plants can be developed within a very short time.

Biotechnology encompasses the production and development of Biofertilizers and Biopesticides are greatly helpful in Agriculture.

These techniques use to utilize the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and enhance the fertility of the soil. These micro-organisms are called as Biofertilizers and some of them are Blue green algae, free living bacteria and symbiotic bacteria.

The Bio fertilizers are supplied to the field in the form of inoculants and it does improve the soil texture, water level and the nutrient supply and proliferation of the useful soil microorganisms.

These are much cheaper than the chemical fertilizers and do not have any side effects.
Hence the farmers should be always encouraged to use the Biofertilizers.

Biotech is poised to give benefits to both rich and poor farmers, big or small industries equally and is more environmentally safe and sustainable.
Thus Biotechnology can do wonders in all the important sectors in the field with minimum investment for which we should seriously focus on.
