Do you know that a cockroach can live for a week without its head? While we humans breathe through our nose and the brain controls that function, cockroaches breathe through little holes in each body segment. Due to their open circulatory system, and the fact that they breathe through little holes, they are not dependent on the mouth or head to breathe. A cockroach’s heart is a simple tube with valves which can pump blood backwards and forwards through the insect. The cockroach only dies because it can’t drink water without a mouth.
