Most of you would be washing your clothes in a washing machine using water and detergents. But have you observed in laundries that they also use a technique called dry cleaning? Do you know what dry cleaning is? Despite its name it is not dry. Instead of water it uses solvents to clean the clothes. The common type of solvent used in dry cleaning is perchloroethylene. The clothes are put into the dry-cleaning machine along with the solvent and is rotated. The temperature inside the machine is kept at 30C to maximize the efficiency. As perchloroethylene is solvent it dissolves grease, oils and waxes and clean the clothe without damaging the fabric.
