Most of us use fingerprint scanner or touch ID to unlock our smart phones. But do you know how these sensors work? The scanner uses an array of capacitor plates to capture the image of a fingerprint. Our fingerprints consist of a unique pattern of ridges and valleys on the surface of the skin. The ridges are closer to the capacitor plates and have a higher capacitance than the valleys. These fingerprint scanners generate a digital image of the ridges and valleys using an electrical current.
